Overview
Planning a family holiday that keeps every age group happy — from toddlers to teens — is one of travel's great challenges. Europe offers an extraordinary range of family-friendly experiences: fairy-tale castles, incredible theme parks, safe Mediterranean beaches, wildlife encounters and history that even children find fascinating. Here are the destinations that deliver for the whole family.
- Neuschwanstein Castle — the real Sleeping Beauty castle
- Algarve sea caves and beach kayaking
- Swiss Alps cog railways and glacier viewing
- Disneyland Paris and the Eiffel Tower
- Malta — snorkelling, history and warm sea
🏰 Bavaria, Germany — Fairy-Tale Castles
Neuschwanstein Castle — the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle — stands above the Bavarian Alps in theatrical perfection. Children are spellbound by it. Combine a castle visit with the Zugspitze mountain cable car, the Legoland Deutschland theme park in Günzburg, and the interactive Deutsches Museum in Munich — the world's largest science museum, with hands-on exhibits children love.
Book Neuschwanstein tickets online at hohenschwangau.de — the castle sells out daily and on-site tickets are limited.
🌊 Algarve, Portugal — Beaches and Rock Formations
The Algarve's golden beaches, dramatic rock arches, sea caves and warm shallow waters make it Europe's finest family beach destination. Praia da Marinha, Praia de Benagil and Lagos offer extraordinary rock formation kayaking tours. The water parks — Slide & Splash and Aquashow — are excellent. The region is safe, affordable, and remarkably easy to navigate with children.
Book a kayak sea cave tour from Lagos or Carvoeiro — even young children can participate and it is an unforgettable experience.
🏕️ Swiss Alps, Switzerland — Adventure for All Ages
The Swiss Alps offer extraordinary family adventure across every season. In winter, child-friendly ski resorts like Wengen, Grindelwald and Verbier have excellent ski schools. In summer, the same mountains offer luge rides, cog railways, mountain walks with panoramic views, and the Jungfraujoch — the 'Top of Europe' at 3,454m where children see glaciers and permanent snow in July.
🎠 Disneyland Paris — Classic Family Magic
Just 40 minutes from central Paris by RER train, Disneyland Paris remains Europe's most popular theme park and a guaranteed hit with younger children. Stay on-site at one of the themed hotels for the full experience including early park access. Combine with a day or two in Paris itself — the Eiffel Tower, river cruise and Musée des Arts et Métiers are all child-friendly.
Visit Disneyland Paris midweek in October or early November — school holidays are over in most of Europe and crowds are dramatically smaller.
🐠 Malta — History, Beaches and Culture
Malta packs extraordinary variety into a tiny island: world-class snorkelling, prehistoric temples (older than Stonehenge), a spectacular walled capital in Valletta, and some of the Mediterranean's warmest, clearest water. It is English-speaking, extremely safe and affordable. The Blue Lagoon on Comino island is one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular natural swimming spots.
